It is almost 12 years since Wayne Rooney swapped blue for red and became Manchester United's third most expensive signing.
The 30-year-old has scored 247 goals for United in 12 seasons, won five Premier Leagues, two League Cups, the FA Cup, the Champions League and the Club World Cup. After the Class of '92 cleaned up, Rooney became another British United player who to enjoy such an exceptional career his house required an extension to fit all the silverware into it.
Everton are appropriate opponents for the Scouser. Rooney's relationship with his boyhood club soured after he left but, over the last six or seven years, it is much more respectful and the prospect of Rooney returning to Goodison Park has been mooted so often it was even suggested he could play a half for both sides tonight.
Jose Mourinho and Ronald Koeman are preparing for big seasons, though, and it could be more of an intense testimonial rather than the usual mundane matches.
