Mahadayi row: An out of tribunal settlement preferred

Bengaluru, Aug 3: Karnataka would look for an out of tribunal settlement in a bid to sort out the Mahadayi water dispute. Karnataka's legal team had in fact insisted that no interim petition should be filed, but leaders across political parties had refused to take that advise. The legal team is now of the opinion that the issue should be settled out of the tribunal. Further the team is also of the opinion that a political resolution on this issue would be the right way to go instead of fighting it out in the tribunal.

However, the government has told the legal team to look closely at the interim verdict of the tribunal and find out where it went wrong for Karnataka.
If the all party meeting decides that an out of tribunal settlement is better than going in for an appeal to the Supreme Court, then the Chief Minister would once again seek the intervention of the Prime Minister on the issue.
Siddramaiah, Chief Minister of Karnataka would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention into the matter.
Last week Karnataka's interim petition to use 7.65 TMC of water was rejected by the tribunal. K
arnataka had sought to use water from the Mahadayi basin to the Malaprabha river. The Tribunal observed that other states are also presenting their case seeking water. Under such circumstances it was not possible to admit Karnataka's plea.
The legal advisor to the government of Karnataka, Brijesh Kalappa says that any decision in regard would be taken at an all party meeting. Issues relating to water and borders are always taken at an all party meeting.
