Royal Enfield‘s strategy of one new bike per year from 2016 until 2018, was revealed by Siddartha Lal, CEO and MD of Royal Enfield, in an interview with the Economic Times. Isn’t this great news for thumper fans across the country? As if this piece of information wasn’t exciting enough by itself, he further revealed that the new bikes would go all the way up to 750 cc.
The company’s current stable features 350 cc motorcycles which are RE’s least powerful offering; a 500 cc lineup which has the most number of motorcycles on offer and a 535 cc cafe racer, the powerful offering. The expanded lineup will see RE’s machines compete with the Harley Davidson street 750.
The much anticipated 400cc motorcycle, which is rumoured to be christened “
Royal Enfield Himalayan” may well be the first of these bikes to be launched. It is going to to be their first adventure tourer. Based on various spy shots, the test prototype is seen featuring high positioned saddle, mono shock suspension at the rear and upswept tail pipe for starters. It has raised handlebars to make for an upright and comfortable riding position meant for touring. Both front and rear wheels benefit from disc brakes.

Lal has made it clear there will only be two new platforms, meaning only one of the motorcycles launched in 2017 and 2018 will feature a brand new motor, and with high probablity it will be the one in 700-750 cc class. To realise this vision, the company is investing a total of INR 500 crores in a multitude of activities, including improving production capacity to 4.5 lakh units per annum, in order to keep up with rapidly rising sales figures. RE has reported yearly sales of over 3 lakh units in 2014 which is a 60 percent growth over its 2013 sales figures, overtaking global giant Harley Davidson who reported sales of 2.67 lakh units in 2014.
Further, as part of the motorcycle maker’s plans to become the global leader in mid-sized motorcycle segment, they will be setting up two technology centres, one at Chennai, on old Mahabalipuram road, and a smaller one at Leicestershire, the UK. [Spy Shot Credit: Gaadiwaadi.com
Royal Enfield is all set to push into the markets of developing nations, in Latin America and Southeast Asia. The manufacturer already exports motorcycles to these markets, but plans are now in place to expand sales networks. Local manufacturing there may also be in the books, depending on market response and feasibility.
